Cecilia Oliveira, in collaboration with Dr. Michael Riegner and Alexander Ziegler. We are looking forward to exploring new avenues to reflect on rights of nature with you and our two guests: Dr. Riccarda Flemmer, Hamburg University/ FU, and Laura Duarte, ECCHR.
The event will take place on September 29 from 14:00-15:30 (MESZ). There will be a live screening in the IASS ballroom in Potsdam (attendance limited to 30 persons) as well as an interactive live transmission via Zoom.
Film Description
“Jatun Yacu” is the indigenous name, in Quechua language, for one of the tributaries of the Amazon river in Ecuador. As the Amazon river flows from its source to the Atlantic Ocean, it crosses four countries with different legal systems. This documentary film traces the ebb and flow of rights in and of the Amazon across space and time, ethnographically exploring the question of what it means for a river to have rights, where these rights come from and what they might look like visually.
The film uses case studies to analyze the struggle for rights and legal subjectivity of the Amazon, as well as the problems these rights address and those which they produce. What does it mean if nature shifts from legal object to subject? Who speaks for nature? If everyone can claim the rights of nature and if everyone is responsible for nature, may it be that ultimately no one is?
